Green Tea vs. COVID: The Latest Research

Green Tea vs. COVID: The Latest Research

Intrigued by recent research findings discussed in a 2023 paper by Kristen V. Brown from Bloomberg highlighting the remarkable efficacy of green tea, matcha, and black tea in deactivating subvariants of the Omicron strain of Covid, we've taken a personal interest in delving deeper into this groundbreaking discovery. These revelations have sparked our own curiosity, leading us to explore the potential antiviral properties of these teas more extensively. Through our own investigative journey, we hope to not only understand but also contribute to the growing body of knowledge surrounding tea's role in fighting viral infections. This endeavor carries a personal commitment to uncovering new insights that could have a significant impact on public health.

Latest research shows that the EGCG levels in green tea (also known as catechins) are potentially safeguarding the cells in our bodies from potential harm. The catechins are being studied for the ability to fight off harmful diseases, health conditions and cancer.

It has been shown that green tea is able to potentially fight off and reduce the spread of cancer cells. Green tea has also demonstrated the capacity to disrupt cell replication, resulting in the death of tumor cells. Additionally, it could possess the capability to decelerate the development of blood vessels surrounding tumors. When coupled with green tea's remarkable antioxidant content, which facilitates cell damage repair, its potential as a cancer-fighting agent becomes quite promising.

With this information, it is not far-fetched that green tea can also incapacitate the SARS-COV-2 cells. Research has indicated that infected cells introduced to green tea and candies containing EGCG in a laboratory setting showed that “EGCG was able to at least partially block SARS-CoV-2 from binding to the cell.” (Bloomberg)

While green tea and its components have shown antiviral properties in laboratory studies against various viruses, including some coronaviruses, it's important to note that no specific scientific evidence supports the use of green tea as a treatment or preventive measure for COVID-19. COVID-19 is caused by the novel coronavirus SARS-CoV-2, and research in this area is ongoing. While green tea can be a part of a healthy diet and may offer some general health benefits, it should not be relied upon as a sole or primary defense against COVID-19. It's essential to follow public health guidelines and consult with healthcare professionals for accurate information and guidance related to COVID-19.

While the research isn't set in stone that the tea can fight off the coronavirus, there is research showing that green tea can have many other health benefits! Green tea can help with cognitive function, oral health, weight management, hearth health to name a few!
