Spiced Chamomile + Honey Hot Toddy

Hot Toddy, Hot Whiskey, Hot Wow. 

Hot Toddy's resonate with pleasant memories for me. My first go at it was a weekend in Ireland while I was studying in England for a semester. Long story short, after being stuck in a plane on the tarmac for hours and spending an entire day in an airport (after being very hungover, might I add), I was feeling heavy with a chest cold that weekend. Thankfully, Hot Whiskey is a much more common find at pubs than it is here, and a bartender in Dun Laoghaire (who was, also thankfully, a friend of my now husband) made sure to keep my hot whiskey full until we left after a night of live music. It was the best Hot Whiskey I've ever had and, not to mention, it did its job well. I remember it clearly - it was a cute little glass of hot water and whiskey, with lemon, honey, and star anise on top. Well, today I'd like to share a Hot Whiskey recipe that brings back pleasant nostalgia for me and is bound to kick your sick blues away.

There are many recipes and takes of Hot Toddys, and from them all, I like this one best. It uses chamomile and ginger root and tastes marvelous – not too sweet but still easily drinkable. The Organic Chamomile is relaxing and soothing, a mild herb that balances this toasty drink!


- 2 cups water

- 1 cinnamon stick

- 3 whole cloves

- 1 teabag of Organic Chamomile tea (2 teaspoons should do the trick)

- 1 teabag of ginger root (1 or 2 in. piece of cut ginger)

- 2 or 3 tbsp honey (or you can add more if you'd like it a bit sweeter)

- 1/4 cup whiskey

- 2 tbsp fresh squeezed lemon juice

 *yields one large toddy or two small ones

1.) Pour two cups of water into a small saucepan. Add the cinnamon stick and three whole cloves and turn heat on medium-high. Bring to a boil, reduce heat to medium-low and let simmer for 20 minutes. The goal is to make cinnamon tea here.

2.) Turn the heat off. Take out the cinnamon stick and cloves and place the ginger and chamomile teabags in the saucepan. Let it steep for 10 minutes with the lid on.

3.) Take the teabags out. Add honey, whiskey, and lemon juice. Turn heat to medium and stir until honey is dissolved and the drink is the temperature you want.

4.) Pour into a mug for one large serving or into two mugs for smaller servings.
