The Origin of Oranges
The bright, fragrant fruit first took root in ancient Asia before slowly making its way to Europe and the Americas. For centuries, it remained a luxury reserved for the wealthy, who could afford to import it or cultivate it in carefully maintained private groves. Its name traces back to the Sanskrit naranga, likely from the Tamil naru, meaning “fragrant,” a testament to its vivid scent. These trees enter a semidormant state in winter, tolerating light freezes unless frost strikes too early in their growth cycle.
Before 1920, the fruit was mainly served as a dessert, but the rise of juice drinking transformed consumption patterns and made it a daily staple for many.
Beyond its history, it delivers meaningful health benefits: shielding cells from damage, supporting collagen formation for wound healing and smoother skin, slowing age-related macular degeneration, and offering natural anti-inflammatory effects. Its gentle sugars and potassium provide a balanced, nourishing boost.
- fun fact: There are now over 600 varieties of oranges worldwide with Brazil and the US leading the producing the most of this fruit!
Oranges and St. Nick
The orange became a Christmastime tradition in the 19th century, alongside the growing custom of hanging stockings by the fire, and it later settled into a gentle haze of nostalgia. Several explanations surround its lore. One links it to Saint Nicholas, Bishop of Myra, and the Miracle of the Dowries: he secretly provided three poor maidens with gold for marriage, and folklore claims that one bar conveniently fell into a stocking drying by the hearth. From this tale grew the habit of elders quietly placing gifts in children’s shoes, stockings, or other small vessels.
“’A Christmas orange for the toe of every Christmas stocking’ is a wish that the Exchange would like to see fulfilled this year.”
Don Francisco Editor of The California Citrograph. January 1921
Two other explanations for the tradition point to the Industrial Revolution and the Great Depression. As the 20th century approached, industrialization created a new surplus of goods, including citrus, which Europeans had long desired even before they could grow a reliably edible orange. The fruit became a small emblem of wealth and abundance.
Later, during the Great Depression, oranges took on a different meaning: they were an affordable luxury, often called the “fruit of the Depression.” Because families couldn’t buy them regularly, receiving one at Christmas felt significant, folding the fruit into the season’s modest celebrations and hopes for brighter days. Now the orange lingers in Christmas stockings as a small echo of the past, a nostalgic thread keeping an old tradition alive long after its meanings have softened with time.

Organic Herbal Orange Cinnamon Spice
"Absolutely delicious and comforting as the weather turns cooler. The combination is perfect – neither the orange nor cinnamon overpower the other and the longer the tea bag steeps, the more it achieves a wonderful balance of sweetness and spice. I will definitely buy this tea again!"

"I love this tea! It offers a nice crisp fall taste. I found it great to also simmer with apple cider!
I am in love with all of their teas. They have such a good taste and never leave me with a dry tongue like some of the cheaper teas do. It shows the difference in quality and lack of extras!"
