Drowning in matcha
Did you know that Affogato is Italian for "drowned"? So quite literally, this is a treat drowned in matcha. And, it needs to be drowning... in my belly. Not to mention, caffeinated sweet treats are the best kind of sweet treats. If you don't believe me now, you will after you've read this. Splurge – you know you want to.
Affogato brings back memories of my stay in Italy. A few weeks wasn't nearly long enough, but enough to experience many wonderful things. The Vatican, the Coliseum, Sienna, Venice, just to name a few. One of my all-time favorite things about Italy though? The affogato. It's true! You won't find better affogato (or gelato) than you will there. Except for maybe this one.
Ginger Matcha Affogato
Dessert / Ice Cream
The Bojon Gourmet does an amazing rendition of matcha affogato. Affogato isn't necessarily a new thing, but Bojon Gourmet adds a tiny spicy spin to it with ginger. I've tried regular matcha affogato, but trust my judgment: this one tops it.
The experience of making affogato is an exhilarating one. There's something entirely unique about watching the matcha melt the ice cream melt and shape it into a new form, kind of like how a chef shapes bread or a sculptor molds clay. The grassy, mild taste of matcha compliments the bold and spicy nature of ginger, while the vanilla ice cream tops it off with a sweet and creamy finish, making a smooth combination of flavors altogether.
2 Tsp. Organic Premium Matcha
3/4 Tsp. ginger powder (the powder mixes better with hot water and matcha)
1/4 Cup and 2 Tbsp. hot water
1/2 Cup vanilla ice cream (dairy or non-dairy)
Combine ginger powder and matcha in a small bowl, big enough to fit a whisk. A matcha bamboo whisk and matcha bowl are preferable, though a small bowl and wire whisk will work as well.
Whisk water and powder mixture together. Start by adding a small bit of water to form a paste at first, and then gradually add the rest of the water until mixture is smooth.
Pour matcha over ice cream and serve
Impress guests at a dinner party, or even just enjoy by your lonesome. This delicious treat is capable of pleasing any and all! May your matcha affogato experience be as enlightening as mine was.
