Yerba Mate: Smoked or Unsmoked🧉 | Health Benefits and More

What is Yerba Mate?

Yerba mate is a traditional South American beverage known for its energizing properties and rich, earthy flavor. It comes in two main varieties: smoked and unsmoked. While both types offer similar health benefits, they differ significantly in taste, aroma, and even cultural significance. In this blog, we’ll explore the key differences between smoked and unsmoked yerba mate, helping you choose the right one for your palate.

What you'll need to drink Yerba Mate Traditionally!

  1. Yerba Mate : The dried leaves and stems of the yerba mate plant.
  2. Mate Gourd (Mate) : A small, hollowed-out gourd or a cup made of wood, ceramic, or metal specifically designed for drinking mate.
  3. Bombilla : A metal straw with a filter at the bottom to prevent the yerba mate leaves from being sucked up.
  4. Hot Water : Ideally heated to about 150-180°F (65-80°C). The water should be hot but not boiling.

traditional yerba mate steps

Steps:

  1. Fill the Mate Gourd : Fill about two-thirds of the gourd with yerba mate. Tilt the gourd so the yerba mate piles up on one side.

  2. Cover and Shake : Cover the top of the gourd with your hand, turn it upside down, and shake it gently. This helps to mix the fine particles with the larger leaves, preventing the bombilla from getting clogged.

  3. Insert the Bombilla : Place the bombilla into the side with less yerba, at an angle, and leave it there. Try not to move it around once it's in place, as this could stir up the leaves and cause clogging.

  4. Pour Hot Water : Gently pour hot water into the mate, soaking the yerba mate on the side where the bombilla is placed. Add just enough water to moisten the leaves without flooding the gourd. Let it sit for a moment to allow the leaves to absorb the water.

  5. Sip and Refill : Sip the mate through the bombilla. After finishing, refill the gourd with more hot water and pass it to the next person if you’re sharing. The same gourd is typically refilled and shared among friends or family.

  6. Repeat : Continue refilling with hot water and sipping until the yerba mate loses its flavor, at which point you can start a fresh gourd.

This method of drinking yerba mate is as much a social activity as it is a way to enjoy a unique and energizing beverage.

Smoked Yerba Mate?

Smoked yerba mate is known for its bold, robust flavor, offering a strong, earthy, and slightly bitter taste, with a deep, smoky essence that some liken to the aroma of a campfire or roasted wood.

This rich, smoky flavor is a direct result of the traditional drying process, where the yerba mate leaves are dried using wood smoke—a method that has been practiced for centuries in regions like Argentina, Paraguay, and Brazil. This process not only preserves the leaves but also infuses them with the characteristic smoky flavor, which holds cultural significance in many South American countries.

Smoked yerba mate is often associated with traditional rituals, gatherings, and social bonding. However, it’s worth noting that the smoking process may introduce certain compounds, such as polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), which are linked to health concerns when consumed in large amounts over time.

Despite this, the levels of PAHs in yerba mate are generally low, and occasional consumption is not typically a cause for concern.

Unsmoked Yerba Mate

Unsmoked yerba mate is characterized by a milder and fresher flavor profile, offering a cleaner, greener taste with a lighter bitterness. It's often described as more vegetal, with subtle grassy or herbal notes, and without the intensity of a smoky aroma, allowing the natural flavors of the yerba mate leaves to shine through.

The production process for unsmoked yerba mate involves air-drying, heat-drying, or even solar methods, which avoid direct contact with smoke and help preserve the natural flavors. Traditionally less common, unsmoked yerba mate has gained popularity in recent years, especially among health-conscious consumers and those new to yerba mate.

As a cleaner option, unsmoked yerba mate is free from the polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) associated with the smoking process, making it a preferred choice for those who are particularly health-conscious.

Which One Should You Choose?

The choice between smoked and unsmoked yerba mate largely depends on your flavor preferences and any health considerations you may have. If you enjoy bold, intense flavors and the cultural richness of tradition, smoked yerba mate might be your go-to. On the other hand, if you prefer a milder, more refreshing taste or are concerned about potential health risks, unsmoked yerba mate could be the better choice.
