How to Make Matcha | Modern Method

Carly Pearl-Sacks

Making matcha the modern way is a quicker approach compared to the traditional method and can usually be done with tools you already have on hand.

Here are the steps to prepare matcha using modern tools:

Ingredients and Tools:

  1. Matcha of choice
  2. Electric frother or whisk
  3. Bowl
  4. Measuring spoon or teaspoon
  5. Hot water (175°F or 80°C)

Steps:

  1. Boil water: Heat water to about 175°F (80°C). You can use a kettle or a microwave-safe container to heat the water.

  2. Measure the matcha: Using a measuring spoon or a teaspoon, add the desired amount of matcha powder to your matcha bowl or a regular bowl. The standard serving size is 1/2 teaspoon for plain matcha and 1 teaspoon for sweetened matcha, but you can adjust this to fit your preferences.

  3. Add hot water: Pour about 4 oz of hot water into the bowl with the matcha powder.

  4. Whisk the matcha: Use your whisk or frother to whisk the matcha and hot water together until the powder is fully dissolved and a frothy layer forms on the surface.

  5. Pour into a cup: Once the matcha is well whisked and frothy, pour it into your preferred cup or mug.

  6. Enjoy the matcha: The modern way to enjoy matcha allows for more flexibility in serving. You can choose to drink it as is or add sweeteners like honey or sugar, and even incorporate milk or milk alternatives like almond milk or oat milk to make a matcha latte. Customize it to your taste preferences.
